Due to the co-operating
teacher being out, I took the class alone. I had them collect the photocopies
of their Continuous Line Drawings (A3 in size). I then showed them an example
of a drawing with string and glue. I asked them what they noticed about this
type of drawing. This allowed them to really look at the work. They referred to
the continuous line and it allowed them to see the line more clearly. I had a
person from each of the tables retrieve glue, string and cardboard for each of
the people on their tables. They were engaged in their task. They were chatty
but still kept working. At times certain pupils paid more attention to the
chats rather than their work. I intervened and refocused the attention back to
the task at hand. Some pupils became frustrated with how much they had to
concentrate and take their time. One student gave up and gave a hastily
finished effort. I asked if she had given her very best effort. She admitted
she had grown impatient. I asked if she was happy with it, and encouraged her
to attempt it again. I later returned to that particular table and saw the
second attempt of this pupil. It had massively improved, and the pupil was
delighted with the work she had put in. Having the pupil assess their own work
was very effective. It gave her responsibility over her own work, and the
gentle encouragement and the praise that followed the second effort was, I feel
more realised as the pupil herself recognised the need for patience. A handful
of students had cut their string, defeating the purpose of this exercise. However
they realised that they shouldn’t have cut the robe, seeing the point of the
exercise, which is a success in my book.
