Class: 1Art – 1.2
Time: 09:00 – 11:40         (double period)
Date:  08/10/18
School: Coláiste Choilm
Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony

Today was the first day that I took the lead on the class. I took the role and introduced the class to the topic today which is Form, Tone, Contrast, Depth. The pupils were engaged, but I didn’t have the same control as my co-operation teacher. Throughout the lesson I engaged with pupils and spoke to them about their work, making them think about why and what they were working on. Working with different forms, cones and squares, they were analysing how light affects form and the contrast that can be seen in their primary source. I found myself to have a shaky start and have to be mindful of my timing. I need to be more assertive and sure of myself in the beginning. My interaction with them throughout the class is fine, it’s becoming more of the “teacher” in their eyes. Following a conversation with my co-operation teacher, she was happy, pointing out that I needed more of a presence at the beginning and end of my class and to be watching the time. Near the end she became more part of the class just to help with time management.

Welcome to my PME blog. Within this space, I will reflect on the shadowing period of my teaching practice, which follows me in my preparation towards taking my classes alone. I will discuss workshops that take place in the Crawford College, where I can experience the methods of art making that my pupils will experience, seeing through the eyes of both student and teacher. I will also bring my experience from UCC, in which I will reflect on the teaching methodologies that I will use in my own teaching practice. With this blog, I hope to map my progress of this year, and to show the growth that has occurred in both my artistic and teaching practice through the experiences from UCC and the Crawford College.
