Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 11:40          (double period) Date:   08/10/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony Today was the first day that I took the lead on the class. I took the role and introduced the class to the topic today which is Form, Tone, Contrast, Depth. The pupils were engaged, but I didn’t have the same control as my co-operation teacher. Throughout the lesson I engaged with pupils and spoke to them about their work, making them think about why and what they were working on. Working with different forms, cones and squares, they were analysing how light affects form and the contrast that can be seen in their primary source. I found myself to have a shaky start and have to be mindful of my timing. I need to be more assertive and sure of myself in the beginning. My interaction with them throughout the class is fine, it’s becoming more of the “teacher” in their eyes. Following a conversation with my c...

Class: 1Ealín – 4.1 Time: 10:20 – 11:40        (double period) Date: 08/10/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (Ghaelcoláiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle The class was introduced to cross contour line. I explained that by doing cross contour line drawings it would help them better understand the form of their primary object. I had intended to open the lesson by showing them a PowerPoint presentation and video but I had thought the projector wasn’t working. Later realising that it merely needed to be plugged in, I then showed them the PowerPoint and video tutorial in the second class. From this experience I realised that sometimes the most simple thing can be the answer, as well as checking the plugs before moving on. The pupils didn’t notice so I kept my composure and continued on. The class is still quite quiet. I am gradually taking more of the lead in the class. I think I will introduced group work within the class. This will get them to bond as well a...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 11:55 – 13:15          (double period) Date:   5/10/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony The class started with the roll call. The room was rearranged from the last time the pupils were there and they were giddy in response. My co-operating teacher was delayed so I briefly lead the class. I opened the class up questions to the class. What is cross contour? What do we learn from it? How does it benefit our drawings? I felt that this helped to gain their attention. It’s a Friday, their minds are most likely on the weekend. These questions regained their attention. Before the class myself and the co-operation teacher had been planning the next couple of classes, after I had asked the questions to the pupils I was unsure how to proceed. The co-operation teacher stepped in and took charge. I felt I should have lead more. I need to take charge more and be more self-assured. The class ran smoothly,...

Class: 1Ealaín– 4.1 Time: 10:20 – 11:40         (double period) Date:   01/10/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (GaelCholáiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle Due to the majority of the class being absent from a school related activity, choir practice, the previous class, the co-operating teacher decided not to move on to cross contour until the rest of the class had caught up. We won’t move on to cross contour drawing until next week. I found this to be a very good idea, it allows for the pupils who missed out on the last class to catch up. This means that all students have the same opportunity to progress. The co-operating teacher decided this would be a opportunity for peer teaching. The students who were present in the previous class thought their peers what had occurred in the previous class. There some giddiness from the students while they were teaching, which was to be expected. Once all pupils had caught up they continued to do contour lin...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 11:40          (double period) Date:   01/10/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony The roll was called and the pupils were told to take out their homework from the previous class. Moving on from cross contour drawings the pupils were introduced to wire as a media of drawing for the first time. The co-operating teacher went through the health and safety of working with wire (bending the end of the wire in so it can’t do damage if it flicks into their face, concerning the wire cutters). A number of pupils became frustrated quite quickly. One pupil in particular dropped the wire drawing she was working on, claiming it wasn’t working, that it was annoying and she didn’t like the media. Another pupil claimed their hand hurt. The pupils was gently, but firmly encouraged to continue with their work. I’m not sure whether it is because it was a new medium or that they are impatient for near in...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 11:40          (double period) Date:   24/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony The class began with the roll call. Pupils who had missed last week’s class has cross contour drawing explained to them. The co-operating teacher then allowed pupils who were present in the previous class to teach their peers. This was quite successful, bar three pupils who couldn’t explain to the others. They were too giddy, even though the teacher had told them 3 times to help their peers. The co-operating teacher then moved the other two who were not present to another table, so that they could continue with the class. The co-operating teacher did not reprimand them, rather just had them continue with their work. I’m not sure what I would’ve done. One of the students is very quiet in every other class, and is coming out of her shell in this class. To put a stop to social engagement with other student...

Class: 1Ealaín– 4.1 Time: 10:20 – 11:40         (double period) Date:   24/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (GaelCholáiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle The class was quite small today, due to a school activity (choir practice) there were many students absent. The co-operating teacher decided to leave checking the homework until the following class, so that everyone would be able to have their homework checked. Continuing on from continuous line, the pupils were given A3 blown up photocopies of their drawings. They then proceeded to do string drawings. They were engaged with the project, concentrating on their work, talking quietly among themselves. Still very quiet, I’m not entirely sure if this a good thing or not. Yes it’s important to have control over the class, but it is also important to have a good and most importantly creative environment, the co-operating teacher is happy with them, saying that they are just a quiet bunch. After the...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 11:55 – 13:15          (double period) Date:   21/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony The class began with the roll call. Some pupils were missing due to a school activity (choir practice). Homework was checked. Not that this set the class back, but it keeps in mind the next class will be revisiting this subject. However, my co-operating teacher saw this as an opportunity for peer-teaching. After announcing to the class that they would be teaching their pairs, this seemed to have an effect on the pupils. They paid more attention, almost as if the responsibility of teaching their peers was of extreme importance. Give the pupils responsibility, it shows trust and as well it encourages them to pay attention more. It’ll be interesting to see how it works out. The pupils were being introduced to cross-contour drawing. They drew the contour lines on apples after watching a brief video and Powe...

Class: 1Ealín – 4.1 Time: 10:20 – 11:40        (double period) Date: 17/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (Ghaelcoláiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle Due to my co-operating teacher being out, I took charge of the class. Before calling out the role for that class, I instructed the pupils to take out their homework which was to bring in a primary source. After calling out the role, I noticed some students didn’t a primary source with them. I gently but firmly told them that I understood that they were still getting used to the school, however they had to remember any homework given to them whether it be a drawing or picking out an object. Those who did not have an object picked items such as teapots, lamps and wine bottles from the bottom of the room. They began the class with continuous line drawing. They were instructed to draw 3 continuous   line drawings and to pick their favourite one. They then traced their favourite one. After the class I ...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 11:40          (double period) Date:   17/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony Pupils entered the class boisterously. My co-operating teacher settled them down by greeting them and by asking for the pupils to bring up their string drawings from the previous class. The pupils then made rubbings from the string drawings. Following the completion of the rubbings they were hung up on the wall. The class gathered around them and discussed the things they noticed about the rubbings. Among the comments made about the rubbings, it was pointed out that the rubbings were different from other drawings that they had done before. It was a good strategy to introduce the students to peer assessment. This acts as a brief introduction to print. It allows them to see where ink would be in a print. The class then moved onto Contour line. The co-operation teacher had a PowerPoint presentation ready w...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 11:55 – 13:15          (double period) Date:   14/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’ Mahony Due to the co-operating teacher being out, I took the class alone. I had them collect the photocopies of their Continuous Line Drawings (A3 in size). I then showed them an example of a drawing with string and glue. I asked them what they noticed about this type of drawing. This allowed them to really look at the work. They referred to the continuous line and it allowed them to see the line more clearly. I had a person from each of the tables retrieve glue, string and cardboard for each of the people on their tables. They were engaged in their task. They were chatty but still kept working. At times certain pupils paid more attention to the chats rather than their work. I intervened and refocused the attention back to the task at hand. Some pupils became frustrated with how much they had to concentrate an...

Class: 1Ealaín - 1.2 Time: 10:20 – 11:40         (double period) Date:10/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (Gaelcholáiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle The class was a continuation of last week’s class regarding blind contour drawing and an introduction to continuous line drawing through Irish. The class started with a PowerPoint presentation on blind contour drawing with visual examples from artists as well as students. A video tutorial was also shown with an explanation of why blind contour drawing is important and how to improve the pupils hand to eye coordination. After the pupils had down some blind drawings they were instructed to take a walk around the room and view what others in the class had done. I think this was an effective method to show students what others are doing and how different results can come from the same method of working. Following this a short PowerPoint presentation on Continuous line drawing, which included visual exampl...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 11:40         (double period) Date:   10/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’Mahony The class began with the co-operating teacher getting the class to recall what had been done in the previous class. The class answered what they had done and she left the photocopies of the blown up blind drawings for the students to collect. The co-operating teacher then explained that today that they were going to be transferring their drawing onto a sheet in their sketchbooks Two pupils, who were absent, from last week’s class had to catch up with the rest of the class. I explained what had been done last week i.e. the blind drawings and the tracing of the blind drawing of choice of the pupils. The rest of the class, once they had received their blind drawings drew a frame around the photocopy as close to the drawing as possible. They then turned the drawing around (blind drawing facing away from the pupil...

7th September 2018

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 11:55 – 13:15         (double period) Date:   07/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Mentor: Mary O’Mahony The roll was taken and the class settled into the first exercise, blind contour drawing and continuous line drawing. The co-operating handed out leaves for the pupils to draw. They proceeded with drawing multiple blind contour drawings. Changing the angle and even at times the primary source to make a more dynamic and challenging drawing. A PowerPoint presentation including clear instructions, visual examples as well as an instructive video from YouTube. It ensured that students were learning the method of both blind contour drawing and continuous line and why they were drawing this way and how they were going to implement it in a work. In the PowerPoint it was showed examples of Blind contour drawing using colour. The students used tracing paper to copy out their favourite blind drawing. In the next class th...

Class: 1Ealaín– 4.1 Time: 10:20 – 11:40         (double period) Date:  03/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm (Ghaelcholáiste) Mentor: Emilie Doyle This class was taught through Irish. The roll was taken and the pupils drew their names incorporated with drawings of their hobbies, favourite animals, colours and activities. It was a way for me to see what styles that the students draw in and a way for me to learn their names. They worked quietly, and to be perfectly honest that daunted me a little. I was unsure how long to leave them to this exercise. Time management is key. Following this, I introduced the class to Blind Contour Drawing. Due to technical difficulties I could not present my presentation. From this incident in future, I will prep any technology 15 minutes prior to the class starting, so as to avoid “going in blind”. So I explained the benefits of the practice of Blind Contour Drawing. That it helps students improve...

Class: 1Art – 1.2 Time: 09:00 – 10:20    (double period) Date:   03/09/18 School: Coláiste Choilm Co-operating teacher: Mary O’Mahony This class was part of an observation/ team teaching experience. The class started with an introduction to the class that I will be teaching. In this class the learning outcome that was addressed was Drawing 1.4 , demonstrate how they use drawing to observe, record and analyse the human figure and the world around them. The class was continuing from the last class with Blind Contour drawing. The students were told for this exercise they must remember three things, not to look at the page, to keep the pencil/pen on the page and that this exercise is to work on hand to eye co-ordination. The objective of this exercise is to practice the element of line, the shape and the line of the object. The class then continued onto Continuous line drawing. The co-operating teacher then showed the students a video of an artist completin...
